Matt Krayco feels he’s on a different level than Zack Powell heading into Unified MMA 44 matchup

Matt Krayco is set for his first hometown matchup in almost eight years.

Calgary, Alta.’s Krayco (8-9-1) tests skills with Zack Powell (5-1) at Unified MMA 44. This fight transpires on Friday night from Seven Chiefs Sportsplex & Jim Starlight Centre in Calgary and broadcasts on UFC Fight Pass.

Krayco, 31, views this fight as a big opportunity to be competing in his hometown. Calgary hasn’t had the highest volume of professional events for MMA over the last several years and Unified MMA is making a foray into the newer area.

Krayco is facing a tough, young up-and-coming prospect in Powell, but feels he’s being overlooked once again.

“With this fight, I know I’ve got a tough, rising prospect in front of me that keeps being sharp in my face like crazy. I don’t know, I feel like I’m being overlooked on this fight again. I mean, it is what it is. I love to be the underdog and try to overcome all of that. At the end of the day, doing my work. I think there’s going to be a lot of upset people that night,” said Krayco in an interview with MMA Empire.

“Camp has been really good on this, I definitely respect him all around. Everything that he brings with his striking, wrestling, and jits. I definitely respect him, but right now I’m in such a good place. I’ve worked so hard for this. I’m happy, my head’s right and I’m in a very, very good place. I can’t wait to go.”

Although Krayco isn’t looking past or underestimating Powell and what he brings to the table, he said he feels Powell isn’t on his level yet.

“I still look around and stuff like that to see what people are saying about it and their looks on things. I get it, the kid theoretically should be 6-0. Definitely a top-rising prospect. I’ve been around this game for a long time. Definitely hard for me to come by fights, so I respect and appreciate having the opportunity,” said Krayco.

“The furthest thing I’m doing is looking past him. I really like the matchup and I’ll probably get in shit for saying this, but there are levels to this stuff. If everything I’m showing in camp and have been putting in through all the years comes out and I show up, it’s going to be a rude awakening for him.”
