Neal Anderson is locked in for his much-anticipated rematch with Maged Hammo.
Title rematches are where regional careers get defined — the first fight tells you who won one night; the second tells you who actually figured the other one out, and an immediate sequel for the belt is the highest-stakes version of that conversation.
Edmonton, Alta.’s Anderson (11-4) takes on Lethbridge, Alta.’s Hammo (10-6-1) in a rematch for the Unified MMA featherweight title at Unified MMA 45 on Friday night in Edmonton.
The Edmonton-vs-Lethbridge framing adds the usual Alberta rivalry on top of everything else — two of the province's most established featherweights meeting again with a championship between them is exactly the kind of main event Unified has built its Friday cards around for over a decade.
Anderson, 34, has been competing under the Unified MMA banner for over 10 years now and said finally winning a title for the promotion would be a special achievement.
The decade of loyalty is what makes this one personal — Anderson has been on Unified cards since the promotion's early days, and a fighter who has spent ten years main-eventing, co-headlining, and grinding through the same regional circuit without ever holding the belt gets exactly one kind of ending that actually resolves the story.
“That would be pretty cool to win the belt with them. I’ve been fighting for them forever, so yeah, that would be awesome,” said Anderson in an interview with MMA Empire.
Having already shared the cage with Hammo for 15-plus minutes, Anderson said there are certain aspects he learned that he’ll carry forward into the rematch.
Fifteen minutes of shared cage time is the kind of data you can't get from tape — Anderson knows exactly what Hammo's pressure feels like, how his cardio holds, and which of his adjustments worked in the second half of the first fight. That's the kind of information that decides rematches.
But, at the same time, Anderson also said he expects to see a modified version of Hammo and won’t get too wrapped up in what he saw of him in the first meeting.
The mutual-improvement trap is the classic rematch mistake — a fighter who game-plans entirely for the version he already beat is preparing for an opponent who doesn't exist anymore, and Anderson being aware of that is the first sign his camp is built around the actual problem rather than the comfortable one.
“For sure I think there’s stuff to take away from that. I’ve already fought him, so I already know what it’s like to be in there with him. But at the same time you don’t want to expect the same thing. Obviously, he’s fought me too, so he’s going to make adjustments. He might do something totally different this time. The first time I fought him I thought he was more of a striker. He had a bunch of pro boxing fights kind of recently,” said Anderson.
The stylistic surprise is the detail that matters most — expecting a striker and getting a jiu-jitsu specialist is the kind of read that costs fighters the first fight, and Anderson saying it out loud is him acknowledging the one adjustment the rematch actually has to be built around.
“Going into that fight, neither one of us had fought MMA in like two years, but during that time he had two or three pro boxing fights or something. I was thinking oh, well this guy’s obviously a striker, so I was expecting more of a striker. Then I found out after the fight that he’s kind of known as a tricky jiu-jitsu guy. Now I know that, but you’ve got to be prepared for everything.”
