Unified MMA returns after a short break with Unified MMA 46 set to take place in the promotion’s home base of the River Cree Resort and Casino just outside of Edmonton, Alta.
The main event is one of the best to hit the Canadian MMA scene this year as Christian Larsen (7-2) defends his Unified MMA heavyweight championship against former CFFC heavyweight champion and 2021 heavyweight PFL fighter Jamelle Jones (12-8).
Jones, 34, has been chomping at the bit to fight in Canada since before he signed with the PFL in 2021 and is excited with how this fight came together.
“I’m extremely excited. I feel privileged; it’s a huge opportunity. Canada is a beautiful place, I know they have wonderful people and Unified is their best organization,” said Jones in an interview with MMA Empire.
It’s serious to me. I’m going into his deep waters, his backyard, his championship and I think I’m the man for the job.”
Jones’ last few opponents in the PFL were big, bulking Brazilians and when he takes on Larsen he will fight another hulking heavyweight, this time in the Unified MMA heavyweight champion.
“I’m going to keep saying this and there are levels to this game and I am going to see if he is on my level. You know, strength wise, of course he has the strength, he has the size. You know, 6’4″ the guy is massive, he’s athletic, he wrestles. But this is fighting and I’m his biggest challenge. We are going to see if he is on my level and I don’t think he is.”
Jones is still part of the PFL organization and they are allowing him to take this fight outside of his current contract with the promotion.
Jones feels he has something to prove to himself and the MMA world after his last performance in the PFL.
“I fought the best in the world. I don’t think Chris Larsen is the best in the world. Now as far as strength, as far as just being a beast and having the ability to win at heavyweight, I think he’s above average because he’s a beast. But my experience will play a part,” said Jones.
“I don’t care where I’m going I have a task at hand and I don’t care who’s there. If Chris has high school buddies, high school coaches and teammates, girlfriends and ex-girlfriends, if he has mom and dad, I have no one. I got myself. I’m driving there on that drive home I’m going to think about it by myself. I’m putting all the weight on my shoulders so these people are putting all the weight on his shoulders. Let’s see how strong you are when you got all that and me coming at you, right in your face, full throttle, we will see what’s up.”
