Unified MMA 44 - Live results and play-by-play

After a couple of previous attempts, Unified MMA will finally make its Calgary debut tonight. In the main event, Noah Ali and Gabe Sagman will do battle for the vacant Unified MMA bantamweight title. In the co-main event, John Nguyen will get the toughest test of his career when he meets Tom O’Connor in featherweight action, and also on the card will be a meeting of Canadian MMA OG’s in Tim “Shady” Smith and Curtis Demarce.

***Bantamweight Title Fight
Round 1: They feel each other out to start and Ali eventually initiates the offense with a front kick to the chin. Another lull in the action until Sagman presses for the takedown through a flying knee from Ali. Sagman in half-guard but not providing much offense. Sagman working to pass but Ali sinks a guillotine. It’s trouble for a bit but Sagman is able to free himself from danger. Ali works back to his feet and presses him against the cage before securing the takedown. Sagman in full guard and looks to pass and Ali throws his legs up for a triangle but Sagman shucks him off. Ali to his feet and they trade a wild flurry of punches with both men connecting until the final bell. MMA Empire scores round 10-9 Sagman

Round 2: Ali with a flying knee that just comes up short and a combo but Sagman secures the takedown and settles into full guard. Ali chipping from the bottom and Sagman appears to be cut. Ali stands and Sagman keeps his back on the cage. Ali with a leg kick and another that puts Sagman off balance. Sagman looks to land but can’t connect. Ali with a body kick that might have hurt him. Sagman looks to be protecting his right side. More leg kicks by Ali and a low leg kick. Both men trade heavy leather Sagman shoots for a takedown and gets stuck in a deep guilltone but Sagman survives and pulls his head out. Ali lands shots as time runs out. Round 3: Sagman rushes forward but can’t land cleanly. Ali goes high and then low with kicks. Another solid low leg kick by Ali and a combo by Sagman. A finger from Ali lands in the eye and a pause in the action. On the restart Sagman looks for a head kick but it’s blocked. Ali lands one of his own and Sagman with a combo. Ali with a combo and spins forward before landing a knee to the body. Jumping knee and a combo from Ali punctuated with a body kick. Ali gets the takedown and Ali clears the legs briefly. Scramble up by Sagman and ties him up against the cage. Sagman working for the double and Ali chips away to defend. They separate and one more brief exchange ends the round. Round 4: Both men swing wildly and double by Sagman but he’s caught in a guillotine. Once again he guts it out and looks to work back to his feet. Sagman with chipping elbows while Ali tries to pass. Sagman makes it back to his feet and they jockey for position against the cage. Sagman drops for the double and gets it. Ali tries to scramble out but Sagman puts his back on the fence. Ali gets back up and the battles resumes on the cage. Referee Andy Social breaks them up and Ali with a kick to the body and Sagamn goes up high, Flying knee from Ali and he presses the action looking to land. Round 5: Ali presses forward with a range finding combo. Ali with a leg kick and one up the middle. Sagman combo falls short and a kick to the body for Ali. Ali with a leg kick and a right. Jumping front kick from Ali but doesn’t fully land. Sagman looks to land but can’t quite connect and gets the takedown. Sagman working to the back but can’t sink the hooks. Sagman lets go and stands and Ali with a head kick. Ali with a nice combo and body kick. Jumping knee from Ali to the body. Ali with another combo and a body kick. Round 1: Nguyen with a leg kick and O’Connor looking for the single. Nguyen knees the body and defends the takedown before reversing positing. Nguyen gets the takedown to half guard and lands a big right. O’Connor gets back to his feet and they trade. O’Connor again looking for a single but abandons it and lands to the body. Nguyen lands a knee and gets the body lock takedown to half guard. Solid elbow by Nguyen and O’Connor is able to work back to his feet. Nguyen again muscles O’Connor to the mat and takes side control. O’Connor againt gets to his feet and they separate. Both men looking to land and O’Connor presses him into the cage. They break off and Nguyen with a leg kick. They circle for the final seconds of the round and the bell rings. MMA Empire scores round 10-9 Nguyen

Round 2: Nguyen opens with a solid combo and O’Connor with the body lock against the cage. O’Connor can’t drag him down and they separate. Hard body kick for Nguyen and a short left connects. O’Connor gets the takedown and works to the back but Nguyen is able to stand. Chopping leg kick takes Nguyen’s legs out but he’s right back up and in control against the cage. O’Connor pulls the legs out and begins to land under the arm. Nguyen again back to his feet and gets space. Leg kick from Nguyen and O’Connor with a barrage of punches but Nguyen takes them. O’Connor with the takedown and Nguyen back up and now it’s Nguyen looking for the double. Both back to their feet and a nice combo from Nguyen. O’Connor with another takedown and gets the back. Round 3: Both men trade and Nguyen with a combo. O’Connor looking for the takedown but can’t secure it and they exchange fire. O’Connor is able to drag him down and lands. O’Connor is able to sink the rear-naked choke. Nguyen fights it off briefly but is finally forced to tap.

Round 1: Shady misses with a leg kick and a high kick but connects with the next leg kick. Smith presses forward with a combo and both men trade leg kicks. Smith just misses a spinning back fist and looks to land against the cage. Demarce with a double and gets the big takedown to butterfly guard. Smith pushes off and looks to stand against the cage. Smith pushes off the face and gets separation. Demarce fires away against the cage but Smith gets out of the pocket. Thudding leg kicks are exchanged. Smith connects and Demarce presses him into the cage. Demarce with the body lock but Smith reverses and lands. Smith with a leg kick and Demarce sticks a jab. Smith with leg kicks and Demarce goes to the body. Demarce lands one behind the ear and Smith just misses a jumping knee. Round 2: They trade shots and Smith with a body kick and a leg kick. Another wild exchange and Smith presses forward with a combo and a knee. Demarce slows the pace and looks to scoop him up and slam him but Smith defends and breaks away. Big combo and a head kick by Smith. Smith shoots and gets caught in a guillotine but pulls his head free and Demarce pressures him. Smith gets some space and lands. Demarce now with a solid combo and ties up against the cage. They separate ad trade and Deamrce unleashes a barrage. Smith looks like he’s in trouble but weathers the storm and ducks away. Demarce keeps firing away and Smith eating it all. Round 3: A hug to start and right back to the violence. Superman punch from Smith and a front kick from Demarce. Both men trading and might be running out of gas. Demarce ties him up against the cage and Smith reverses positions. Smith with a knee and they keep trading shots before Demarce shoots for another tie up on the cage. Demarce gets the double and works to pass. Smith is able to get back to his feet and Demarce lands to the body. Demarce back on a single and Smith lands a knee. Smith with a leg kick and a combo and another takedown for Demarce. Smith to his feet and lands an elbow and a knee. They exchange one final combo and the bell rings. What a fight!!! Pro 165lbs- Matt Krayco (8-9-1) vs. Zack Powell (5-1)
Round 1: Powell ducks a 1-2 and connects with a hard right and Krayco smiles. Powell with a low leg kick and Krayco pops back to his feet. Powell presses him into the cage and they jockey for position. They separate and Krayco sticks a jab. Krayco with a calf kick and Powell with the big double and drives him across the cage to the fence. Krayco is able to get back to his feet and Powell lands. Powell lands an inside leg kick and a combo. Krayco with a nice calf kick that takes the feet out from under Powell but he’s back up and shoots the double. Krayco is able to work back up against the fence. Powell looking to take it back to the canvas and Krayco defending well. Powell laces the leg but still can’t drag him down and they meet in the middle. Both men exchange and Powell with a jumping knee that doesn’t connect. Round 2: Krayco sticks a jab and Powell looks for the jumping knee but falls short. Huge overhand right doesn’t meet the target for Powell but he gets the takedown. Powell works to the back and starts wrapping his arm around the neck but Krayco gets his back to the cage. Powell gets the lockdown on the leg and works to pass. Powell traying to flatten Krayco out but he stubbornly defends. Krayco elbows the body but can’t free himself from Powell’s grip. Krayco protests to to referee Andy Social to no avail. Krayco reaches over for a leg and hammers the body but Powell scoops him up for the slam and they return to their feet. Front kick from Krayco to the chin but doesn’t get full extension. Combo and a leg kick by Krayco and stuffs a takedown. Single to full guard successful for Powell. Krayco lands from the bottom but can’t mount much offense before time runs out. Round 3: Head kick from Krayco is blocked. Hard right lands from Powell and a brief tie up. Krayco lands and another sweeping leg kick. Solid high kick connects from Krayco and just steps out of the way of a looping right. Powell with the double and trying to establish side control but a stalemate forces a stand up. Powell looking for the single against the cage and slips. Krayco lands an elbow and gets some space. Krayco lands a leg kick and Powell with another takedown. Krayco with some elbows and now looking for a guillotine. Krayco trying to stand but Powell staying heavy. Krayco back to his feet and looks for the jumping knee but falls short. Kracyo with a combo and some elbows and Powell fights off the cage and lands a right. Krayco stuffs a takedown and the momentum is swinging for Krayco. Pro 185lbs- Chris Lee Byrne (5-1) vs. Ali Charkie (2-1)
Round 1: Charkie with the biggest pop of the night so far. Charkie with a hard leg kick to start and a big right misses. Byrne counters a leg kick with a big right but can’t capitalize as Charkie scrambles away. Both men wing big punches but neither connects at full force. Hard leg kick from Charkie and a jab and another leg kick. Solid right and a leg kick connects and Byrne looks to answer but Charkie stays out of range. Hard right glances off Charkies chin and he responds with a leg kick. Another hard leg kick from Charkie but Byrne uses it to secure the takedown. Charkie pops back up and Byrne presses him against the cage. Charkie reverses and muscles him to the mat to half-guard. Charkie chips away with shots and the round come to an end. Round 2: At the end of the break between rounds the doctor is in to check on Byrne and he doesn’t make it off the stool. The fight is waved off due to an apparent knee or leg injury.

Pro 170lbs- Chris Chapman (4-3) vs. Dylan Schellenberg (1-2)
Round 1: They exchange leg kicks to start and Schellenberg unleashes a furious barrage against the cage. Chapman fires back but got the worst of the exchange. They tie up and Chapman gets the back. Schellenberg rolls through and spins but it’s Chapman in half-guard. Schellenberg fires away from the bottom as Chapman tries to pass. Schellenberg working for a kimura but can’t lock it in. Chapman takes the back as Schellenberg tries to escape and has the body triangle. Chapman elbows the shoulder and lands shots. Chapman sinks a rear-naked choke but it’s over the jaw. Schellenberg is able to gut it out briefly but is forced to tap to the neck crank.

Round 1: Leblanc with a front kick to the body and just misses the next one. Stiff jab by Leblanc snaps the head back. Another front kick to the body and a massive head kick lands. Leblanc swarms him and unleashes a barrage of punches that forces referee Chris Desautels to step in and rescue Bujold from any further damage.

Pro 155lbs- Sean Michael (1-0) vs. Jeremy Grieve (0-0)
Round 1: Grieve opens with a pair of leg kicks and rushes in for the body lock. Grieve drags him to the mat and works for the choke. Grieve wraps the arm around the neck but Michael defends the choke and controls the arm. Grieve has the body lock and still working for the rear-naked choke. Michael frees himself and takes the back in a scramble but Grieve is able to escape and work back to full guard. Michael throws up a triangle and switches to an armbar. Grieve is able to pull his arm free and work back to his feet. Michael gets the takedown and now Grieve looking for the triangle. Michael stacks him and escapes out the back to full guard now. Michael stands and lands but Grieve puts him on his back but can’t mount much offense and time expires. MMA Empire scores round 10-9 Grieve

Round 2: Grieve ducks a right and almost catches a standing arm triangle. Grieve does get him to the mat to full guard and Michael threatens with his leg before popping back to his feet and getting the takedown. Michael tries to pass but Grieve doing well to keep guard. Grieve looking for the armbar but Michael stacks and pulls out before moving to half guard. Michael looking for the far side kimura but can’t lock it up. A few chipping elbows but not much else happening. Michael looking for a guillotine to pass to side control and sinks in the D’arce choke. Andy Social steps in but Grieve protests and states that he didn’t tap.

Round 1: Lee with the quick rush and takedown and has the body lock. Bryan tries to stand but Lee muscles him back down and has the back and controls the right wrist. Bryan fires a shot back and Lee gives him one of his own. Lee with a pair of rights under the arm but can’t sink that second hook. Lee lands to the back of the head and a pause in the action. On the restart and Bryan looks to sweep the leg. Lee shoots for the double and gets to half-guard. Big elbows by Lee and Bryan is able to get his guard back. Lee chips away at the body and Bryan works to scramble to his feet but Lee is able to get back to hlaf-guard. Lee landing shots and trying to free his leg to pass. Hard elbows by Lee and he drives him against the cage. Bryan trying to stand and Lee landing shots but he does get back to his feet. Round 2: Lee just avoids a massive knee and presses forward for the takedown and settles into half-guard and lands to the body. Bryan is cut over the left eye and Lee continues to land. Lee posts on the head and connects with a short elbow. Lee continues to chip away and trying to pass to full mount but Bryan is able to keep half-guard. Bryan to his knees and Lee knees the thigh. Bryan trying desperately to stand by Lee is all over him. Lee chips away at the body and landing little shots and Bryan has no answer. Lee briefly works for the choke but goes back to shots. Round 3: Lee shoots back in immediately and gets the takedown and we’re right back to the ground. Lee in full guard and postures up with a big elbow. Bryan gets back to his feet and Lee puts him right back down. Lee takes the back and sinks the choke, looking to flatten him out. Lee can’t do it and goes back to his smothering top control and chipping shots. Bryan tries to spin out and gets to his feet briefly but ultimately he’s brought back to the mat. Bryan somersaults out and back to his feet and lands a hard shot but Lee right back to back control and seems content to cruise to the decision. Bryan tries to pop back up but Lee catches the neck but lets go and right back to control. Bryan tries to stand and Lee with a couple more little body shots and the fight comes to an end. Pro 185lbs- John Moore (0-0) vs. Sebastian Lopez (0-0)
Round 1: Moore with a leg kick and Lopez closing the distance. Moore fires a high kick that misses and Lopez catches a kick and gets the takedown. A scramble ensues and finally Lopez ends up on top in half-guard. Lopez passes to side control and working to the back. Lopez gets an arm free and begins firing bombs under the guard. Lopez wraps his arm around Moore’s neck but he’s able to gut it out and survive. Moore now on top in full guard and looking to pass. Lopez now has a guillotine right in front of us and Moore is able to pop his head out. Moore is cut and working to pass but Moore with a solid guard. Moore lands to the body and Lopez stalls him for a standup. The clash with front kicks and a trade shots. Moore connects with a combo and a body kick right before the round ends. Round 2: Moore with the inside leg kick and a stiff jab followed by another inside leg kick. Moore landing the inside leg kicks and the inner thigh starting to look chewed up. Lopez able to drag Moore to the mat but a scramble and Moore back to his feet. Lopez able to drag him down with a single but again Lopez puts him on the mat. Lopez able to reverse and gets to side control. Moore staples the arm and lands elbows. Moore in half-guard and lands a shoulder strike. Moore steps over to full mount and chips away. Moore grinding with the elbow and using smothering top pressure. Moore knees the body and is in total control as Lopez hasn’t even been able to attempt a stand up. Round 3: Both men pawing and trying to find their range and a leg kick by Moore followed by a body kick. High kick from Moore blocked. Moore with a big combo and another inside leg kick. Front kick up the middle by Moore but doesn’t get all of it. Moore continues to pick apart the leg with kicks, Moore with a nice kick to the body and an inside leg kick. Moore lands a head kick at the end of the foot and back him to the cage and lands. Side kick to the body by Moore and a high kick. They trade leg kicks and Lopez with a stiff left. Amateur 155lbs- Dan Kovalchuk (6-3) vs. Derek Khosa (2-2)
Round 1: They clash with leg kicks right off the hop. Big leg kick and a combo falls short from Khosa. Both men looking to find their range. Kovalchuk connects and Khosa slips. Kovalchuk follows up and lands a barrage but Khosa gets away. Kovalchuk throwing Superman punches but falling short and Khosa unable to find his mark. Head kick misses by Kovalchuk. Leg kick and again Khosa slips and Kovalchuk seizes the opportunity and follows up. Khosa appears to cover up and Kovalchuk continues to fire away and referee Chris Desautels stops the bout.

Amateur 145lbs- Leo Bonin (2-1) vs. Patrick Pajda (1-0)
Round 1: Leg kick by Bonin and a body shot by Pajda. Pajda connects with a big right and they circle the cage. Pajda catches a leg kick by Bonin lands a couple of uppercuts. Pajda catches another but lets go. Bonin with a low leg kick takes Padja’s feet out but can’t capitalize. Hard calf kick by Pajda and he slips but recovers quickly. Bonin lands and presses him into the cage. Pajda gets the trip and lands in full guard. Bonin throws his legs up but Pajda picks him up and slams him and lands a barrage. Round 2: Boni with the leg kick and chases. Pajda with the calf kick and goes up high. Pajda lands to the body and again and Bonin answers with a leg kick. Pajda locks him up and pushes him to the cage. Pajda working for the single and switches to the double. Bonin defends well and Pajda knees the inner thigh. Pajda still trying to secure the double and gives up on it before coming back in. Pajda is back to a single and Bonin hammers away in defense. Bonin knees the body but can’t get off the cage. Round 3: Pajda quickly shoots back for a takedown but is met with a combo. Bonin defends and Pajda right back after it against the cage. Pajda with a knee to the body and Bonin with steady punches and looks for the guillotine. Pajda is able to free his neck and still working for the single. They trade kicks but both are blocked. Pajda has him back against the cage and still unable to secure the single leg takedown. Bonin sprawls and back to his feet. Round 1: They trade and jockey for position against the cage. Deol is able to get the trip against the cage to half-guard. Deol chips away at the body and lands a barrage of hammer fists. Noble trying to sweep but Deol stays heavy. Noble throws his legs up but Deol clears them and takes side control. Deol takes the back and locks in the body triangle. Deol working for the rear-naked choke. Noble to his knees and Deol lets go of the choke and lands. Deol goes back to the choke and goes palm to palm but can’t finish. Round 2: Deol with a huge double leg slam right off the bell. Deol landing and Noble looking for the triangle but Deol clears the legs and lands. Deol in guard and lands but Noble active with the legs. Noble with the near sweep but Deol right back on him. Noble with the near triangle but again Deol is able to get himself out of danger. Noble lands from the bottom and Deol works to the back. Noble spins out and Noble works back to his feet against the cage but eats a big knee to the body. Round 3: Noble presses forward but again Deol gains control and gets the takedown. Deol takes the back briefly but now in half-guard. Noble back to his feet and Deol with the trip back to half-guard. Round 1: Markett with the quick takedown attempt and Carroll working for the guillotine. Markett pops his head out and passes to half-guard. Markett is able to land to the body and head before snatching the neck for the guillotine. Carroll able to pop his head out and Markett flips him and takes side control. In a scramble, Markett is able to lock up a triangle choke and is able to force the quick tap from his more experienced opponent.

Round 1: Erlam paws with jabs and they trade leg kicks. Erlam with a couple body kicks and drives for the single leg. Dzafic is able to defend and spins him into the cage. Dzafic lands to the body and Erlam with a knee to the body. Dzafic chipping away and both men trade knees. Erlam reverses and looks for the double but can’t drag him down. Hard knee to the mid-section but Dzafic puts his back right back to the cage. They separate and Erlam with a kick to the body and drops him with a right and follows up with another shot as time expires, that may have swayed a close round in Erlam’s favor. Round 2: Erlam with a calf kick and Dzafic with a leg kick. Two front kicks to the body for Erlam both looking to land. Erlam looks to grapevine the leg and takes Dzafic to the ground. Dzafic is able to stay on his feet, gets separation and lands. Erlam kicks the body and both men land shots. Erlam is driving for the takedown but Dzafic looking for the guillotine. Erlam frees his head and a knee lands low from Dzafic and a pause by referee Chris Desautels. They restart and Dzafic pressures and lands and gets the takedown to half guard. Lewis answers with a knee but can’t get his back off the cage. Lewis spins and lands a right and breaks away. Lewis with a hard leg kick but Jonasson puts him back on the cage. Round 2: Both men again winging wild shots and Lewis looking to take it to the mat but Jonasson defends. A lull in the action and referee Andy Social breaks them up. They restart and unleash another barrage of bombs. Jonasson is getting the better of the exchange, backs Lewis to the cage, and tees off on him. Lewis covers up and is bent over at the waist and Jonasson continues to relentlessly pummel him with shots until Social has seen enough and waves it off.

Roussin with the combo and a leg kick. Fernandez backs him up and lands a combo and again before landing in the clinch against the cage. Fernandez lands to the body and steps off for the takedown.
