Aaron Jeffery of Canada is riding a wave of momentum right now.
After spending years grinding through regional circuits across Canada and the United States, Jeffery has broken into the elite tier competing for Bellator MMA. At just 29, Jeffery (12-3) is now stepping into the most important matchup of his career, battling former middleweight title contender Austin Vanderford (11-1) at Bellator 284 this Friday on short notice.
Jeffery had publicly expressed interest in facing Vanderford ahead of time, and when the opening appeared, he seized the moment.
"Austin's original opponent was managed by the same people who represent me, and I'd previously discussed a bout with him, so when Bellator learned he was hurt, they contacted me asking if I genuinely wanted the fight. I told them absolutely, Vanderford agreed to step in, Bellator confirmed everything, and here we are," Jeffery explained during a conversation with MMA Empire.
Jeffery understands this bout represents a massive chance to expand his fanbase and accelerate his climb within Bellator's middleweight division.
Beyond the stakes for Jeffery's career, he admitted he actually thrives on the short-notice nature of the fight, since it eliminates weeks of obsessive preparation focused solely on one opponent.
"In my recent bouts, I've gone through extended camps. With the Contenders Series matchup, we signed five months in advance, and my previous fight was scheduled two and a half months out. That's a long time to fixate on one person, one location, one specific date. Coming in on short notice is refreshing—less mental pressure overall."
